Unusual Dog Names - because YOUR dog is unique!
AND what's more - you don't have to limit these to unusual dog names! Choose your hamsters' names from here - or indeed any other pet you need a name for - don't limit yourself - let your imagination run free! Naming your pet is such fun! But, with all the wonderful names out there, WHAT do you choose???!!! Our family has occasionally had major falling-outs over just this issue – and in fact, we once had a cat called ……..wait for it …….. Cat – simply because we COULD NOT agree on a name for her! How I wish we had access to information like I’ve now collated for you! Mind you, the information available on the net isn’t always relevant or helpful – when your have long lists of unusual dog names suggesting you name your dog Sassafras or Joplin Jordache – you wonder what in the world they’re on about! We’re all for unique, fun, off-the-wall and unusual dog names – we had two little hamster sisters called Bubble and Squeek – but imagine standing in the middle of a park and calling your dog Joplin Jordache – or Bealzebub - to heal? I should image you’d get a couple of quizzical looks from passers-by – and your poor dog will NEVER live it down amongst his peers! So, rather than waste your time wading through reams of totally useless information, we’ve complied a extensive, but appropriate list of unusual dog names - boy dog names and female puppy names - unusual pet names, so you can let your creative juices flow and choose the best name for your pet.
But, first of all, here are a few short hints and tips to help you along your way to finding just that perfect name for your dog. Some of these rules don't matter too much if you're picking a name for a pet other than a dog.
Rule 1: When going through lists of unusual dog names, ensure the name you choose for your dog suits your dog’s personality and appearance. Also, don't forget that your dog will grow up! Therefore, whilst Tinker may sound like a good idea for your little Rottweiller boy now - he'll never forgive you for it when he's all grown and handsome! Rule 2: Your dog's name must not sound like a command. Not only will it confuse her - it will also complicate matters for you. The eight basic dog training commands are sit, stay, fetch, down, stand, leave, heal and find. So try to stay away from these sounds. Rule 3: Your dog's name must be fairly different from other pets and people in your home. For example, Holly and Molly will cause huge amounts of confusion - even though the names sound good together. And, little did I know when we moved into our new home, that our new neighbour shared the same name as our cat, Toby! I didn't work that out till I stood calling to our cat in our back garden late one night and our neighbour popped his head over the garden fence to ask if he would do!! It's even more confusing for your poor dog if her name sounds very much like another family member - she will jump to attention every time she hears her name or theirs - and that can be quite exhausting to say the least. Rule 4: The fewer the syllables in your dog's name, the better. This will come in very handy, not only when training your dog – but also for getting your dog's attention in emergencies. You can put a lot more force and authority into a short name and you're more likely to get her attention. Rule 5: Think of the practicalities when naming your dog. When I wanted to call a particular puppy Honey because of the beautiful color of her coat – I very quickly gave in when my husband vetoed my suggestion on the grounds that no way was he going to walk around our local park late at night calling for Honey! You can see his point, can't you?! Unusual dog names can cause quite a stir - but so can some of the most normal ones! Rule 6: If you want to change an adopted dog's name it's ok to do so providing you keep her new name very, very similar to her old one. So, for example, Lucky could be changed to Lucy and your dog will not even notice the difference! Rule 7: And very, very high on the list of important things to consider when naming your dog, is that your dog's name should be short enough to fit clearly on your dog’s id tag – and it is an absolute must that your dog wear one of these at all times. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for your dog to wear an ID tag. Just take a look at these statistics - 95% of lost dogs wearing an ID tag ARE recovered. It doesn't matter how careful you are - you dog WILL go walk-about on his own one day or another. Give him a fair chance of being reunited with you - ensure he wears an ID tag at all times.
And …… talking about pet id tags – did you know there are a HUGE variety of tags out there? So, no need to stick to run of the mill aluminium tags, metal tags or stainless steel pet tags – practical though these are. Instead, you can choose pet tags as individual as your pet! You will find a range of custom dog tags, engraved dog tags, personalized dog tags and even medical dog tags. Medical dog tags come in particularly useful if your dog has a condition which requires regular medication – this could make the difference between life and death for a lost pet. Dog identification tags come in many shapes and sizes – and in a price range to suit every pocket – so please don’t let your dog go without one of these. If you think pet identification tags are a bit of a pain – irritating your dog’s neck and jangling all over the place (I know our Scottie simply hates her tag!) – you can always check out the handy range of dog tag silencers which will eliminate both these problems. Dog id tags can be as simple as you like or you can go completely wild and select from a range of dog tags which will make your pooch the talk of the town?! However, please do realise that a pet identification tag is more than just an accessory – it could make the difference between life and death for your dog – so have fun choosing a few unusual dog names to try out for your new pet, but don't forget to select an appropriate pet tag – and ensure your pet is never without one.
