As a pet owner, it would be unrealistic to expect your pet to never have the occasional accident indoors. Accidents can occur because your pet just got caught short (happens to the best of us!), he's marking his territory or is just plain being lazy.

However, if you notice a pet which has always been clean before is now messing indoors, you may have a problem on your hands.

Pets will sometimes change their habits if a new pet has joined the home or if they are pretty unsettled - such as times just before you move home or in the early days of moving into a new home. The best way to get through this is with gentle, firm and consistent house-training - and knowing just how to clean pet urine!

Occassionally - and mainly in the case of male dogs and cats, neutering fixes this problem as it is to do with marking territory and dogs and cats that are neutered don't seem that interested in this particular activity any longer!

If none of the above applies, your pet may have an underlying medical reason for their behaviour - and wondering how to clean pet urine may really be the least of your problems.

Our dog Holly frequently has a bladder infection straight after she has finished a season - and we’ll find tiny puddles dotted around the house. Fortunately, we have tiled flooring, so a quick mop and disinfecting of the area is all that is needed - in addition to a quick trip to the vets for poor old Holly.

But this could also indicate other health problems - some of which are potentially serious if left untreated - so do consult your vet if the problem continues.

Do also bear in mind that old dogs may grow incontinent - make special allowances for them. Either let them out frequently or get or even indoor potty-training pads to help them along.

Incontinence diapers are also available for dogs who need them - but as any owner of a senior pet will tell you, patience - and knowing how to clean pet urine - is an absolute must.

How to clean pet urine? Keeping your carpet odor and pet urine stain free is fairly easy - but first you must get to the mess quickly. It’ll be easier to remove pet urine odors and the stain will have less of a chance to set into your carpet, furniture, or bedding if you lose no time tackling your pet‘s little accident.

But you can’t just clean up the pet urine; you also have to use a proper carpet deodorizer on the area of the accident to properly remove carpet odors and specially to eliminate cat urine smells…….. because nothing lingers like cat urine odor, specially if you have a tom cat!

Even if your human nose can’t smell it, believe me a pet’s nose can find the faintest trace of an accident. Worse, they may want to mark over an old pet urine stain with their own urine scent. Therefore, knowing how to clean pet urine properly is so important.

When working out how to clean pet urine, you will find many pet urine cleaning products out there - but which ones work and which ones don't? Don't waste your money - first read our reviews about the various products to find pet urine cleaning products that actually work - and that are kind on your pocket!

The healthiest choice for your family and your pets is a non-toxic product specifically made to remove pet urine stains and pet odors. When you’re looking for ways how to clean pet urine, you can also make inexpensive cleaning solutions at home from non-toxic stuff like baking soda, club soda, and white vinegar. However, these usually have very limited effectiveness and the smells and stains come creeping back in no time at all - which simply means your pet will be targetting the same spots over and over again ........... not very nice!

Regardless of WHAT you choose for a pet urine cleaner, be sure to deal with pet messes as soon as possible. Getting rid of pet mess promptly and treating stains properly can help you prevent permanent damage to your carpets, upholstery, walls, and floors.

When wondering how to clean pet urine, the most important thing to do when cleaning carpets and dealing with a pet urine stain is to remove all the odor. Eliminating cat urine odor can be particularly difficult and instinct may have not just your cat, but your dog too, returning to mark over the old scent. The best way to remove pet urine and thus get completely rid of dog and cat urine smell is to be very, very thorough.

  • If you have found a fresh pet stain, soak up the urine immediately with a white towel or paper towels. Don’t rub; that can damage carpet fibres. Blot the stain. When you think you’ve gotten as much as possible up, take a fresh towel or paper towel and stand on it. You may extract more liquid that way.

  • Rinse the area with water to dilute the urine - using a carpet stain removal system such as a wet/dry vacuum at this stage really helps. If you are dealing with an old, dried urine stain, this should be your first step.

  • Blot again using clean towels or paper towels.

  • Absorb as much of the extra liquid as you can; standing on the towels will help here. Using really absorbent things like baby nappies or sanitary towels will also help.

  • If at all possible, lift up your carpet and place absorbent nappies or sanitary towels between the carpet, liner and floor. The small patch that you can see on your carpet, spreads enormously on the underside of your carpet.

  • Apply a carpet stain cleaner or enzyme neutralizer. Follow the directions on the product for best results. Go to our review of pet urine cleaning products for more information on what works and what doesn’t.

Some cleaning experts suggest rinsing the area of the accident with club soda and blotting before using a cleaning agent. You can also mix baking soda in water and saturate the area to help eliminate carpet pet odors. Let the liquid stand a few minutes, then blot and allow to air dry.

White vinegar mixed with equal amounts of water also makes a great all-purpose natural cleaner and deodorizer. For extra scrubbing power, you can add a squirt of dishwasher soap to the mixture. This combined with the use of a good wet/dry carpet washer may be all you need. Give it a go. If this doesn't work you can be guaranteed the pet urine cleaning products we recommend will do the job.

If you’re low on paper towels or don’t want to use your good linens for pet messes (completely understandable!), newspapers are very absorbent. However, the newsprint can stain your carpet, so use a few paper towels as a buffer between the carpet and the newspapers. Baby diapers or sanitary napkins are other extremely absorbent alternatives for pet urine clean ups.

Pet Urine Cleaning Do's and Don’ts

  • Don’t leave your carpeting soaked. Trapped moisture can lead to mildew and mould in your carpet. See above for recommneded ways of getting your carpet as dry as possible.

  • Do try to use a non-toxic enzyme neutralizer for removing pet urine stains and odors.

  • Don’t use ammonia. The scent of ammonia is similar to the scent of urine and may encourage your pet to mark over the spot.

  • Do remember that liquid stains spread outward as they seep into your carpet. Clean the area around the visible urine stain - once again, a wet/dry vacuum cleaner will be the best carpet stain cleaner.

  • Do test your pet urine cleaner on a less visible spot of carpet, upholstery, or fabric. Test your cleaner immediately after you buy it so you don’t have to waste time performing a test when an accident happens.

  • Do clean the carpet underlay and pat beneath the carpet if you have access to it. If this is not done, the stain and smell will seep back up through the carpet and the cycle will continue.

Training experts suggest that you NOT let your pet watch you clean up the mess. Allowing them to watch can give the mistaken impression that the cleaning is a game (How cheeky is that?!). Leave your pet in another room (after they’ve finished their bathroom business) while you clean up.

I really wish I could tell you you’d never have to worry about how to clean pet urine. However, I’d be lying if I pretended that getting rid of pet urine and pet urine stains was not a guaranteed part of pet ownership …….. but we love them all the same, don't we?!
