| Breed Characteristics: |
A very unique, but famous breed, the Collie is well-known because of the long running television show “Lassie.” Almost any adult will recognize this breed by their long, narrow muzzle, their perky ears, shaggy, medium length coat and happy demeanor. They almost always have a tri-colored coat that is either smooth or rough in texture, with a mixture of white, black and brown. The underbelly and lower legs are almost always white in appearance. The average Collie weighs 55-75 pounds and stands 23-26 inches tall.
Collies are known for their extreme intelligence, although they may have a stubborn streak, so consistent training is very important. This breed is extremely loyal to their human family, as the television show suggests, and they will go to great lengths to protect them. For the most part they have a gentle nature and can even be categorized as sensitive. With this in mind, they make good watchdogs, but do not make very good guard dogs, despite their size. Remember that because of their background, they may have a herding tendency, but regular exercise can help them direct this energy elsewhere.
